Class Support - Teach-A-Course Sign-Up Form


Faculty, adjuncts, TAs, instructors, and other members of the university community may request to teach courses or bring classes to the University of Cincinnati Virtual Campus in Second Life.

They can sign up to teach classes in SL by using the Teach a Class or Workshop link on our main UC Second Life Project websiteor they can click to sign up in the Registration & OneStop building on our virtual campus.

Processing a Request to Teach a Course



1. See incoming requests on the UC Second Life - Teach a Course Sign-Up spreadsheet.

2. Create a Group in Second Life for the course:

  • external image 4203722635_9bbae91e99_o.jpgEdit > Groups > Create button on the right (It costs L$100 to create.)
  • Name the course in the following format, using the information provided by the instructor:
    • UCSL_YearQuarter_CouseID (Example: UCSL_09W_15EVST395H001)
  • Paste the following into the Charter space, and replace the appropriate text with the information provided by the instructor:
    • University of Cincinnati Course in Second Life
      Course ID: 09W_15EVST395H001
      Course Name: Human Dimensions in Climate Change
      Instructor(s): Wendy Eisner (SL: Leslie Forager), Eric Maurer (SL: VZ Thibedeau)
      For support, please contact: secondlife@uc.edu
  • In the settings below, check the following boxes:
    • Group Preferences:
      Show in Search: Checked
      Open Enrollment: Unchecked
      Enrollment Fee: Unchecked
      Select: Mature
  • Drag a copy of the UC Logo into the logo box


3. Enroll the instructor's Second Life account, and the UC Second Life Project's administrative account for courses (SL: UCSLCourseMgr Absent) in the course as Owners:

  • From the Group - Info window, click the "Members & Roles" tab
  • Click the "Invite New Members" button in the top half of the window
  • Click the "Open Resident Chooser" button
  • Search for the instructor's SL name, highlight it and choose "Select"
  • Search for UCSLCourseMgr Absent's name, highlight it and choose "Select"
  • Use the pull down menu in the left side window to change their role to "Owner"
  • Click the "Send Invitation" button and close the open windows








4. Create an entry on the "Take a Class in SL" board using the file:
  • Add a prim to the next row either by building a new one or copying an existing one. MAKE SURE IT IS FULL PERMISSIONS.
  • In PhotoShop, edit the texture with the appropriate information for this course (only edit the first two layers for course # and name, select either white or grey layer with the eye symbol, alternating with previous listings on the board), save it as a JPG, and upload to SL for $10L.
  • Paste the texture on the face of the prim to add this entry to the available courses list.

5. In Edit mode, select the invisible prim over the "Join Class Group" button on a previous entry, shift+drag down to copy the prim and edit it for the next course:
  • Change the object name to the correct course number, example: UCSL_10W_15COMM429001 - Left click to request invitation to grp
  • Change the object group to the correct group, example: UCSL_10W_15COMM429001

6. In Edit mode, select the invisible prim over the "Get Class Landmark" button on a previous entry, shift+drag down to copy the prim and edit it for the next course:
  • Change the object name to the correct course number, example: UCSL_10W_15COMM429001 - Left click for landmark to classroom
  • Change the object group to the correct group, example: UCSL_10W_15COMM429001
  • In the Contents tab of the prim, drag the appropriate landmark from your inventory to the classroom selected by the instructor (listed on the spreadsheet)

7. Send a the Second Life Course Confirmation email template to the instructor:
  • Edit the template with the appropriate information for the course.

8. Mark which tasks you have completed on the UC Second Life - Teach a Course Sign-Up spreadsheet.
